Adelaide Dickens Fellowship Final Donation to WCH

It was with great sadness that the Friends learnt of the decision to close the Adelaide Dickens Fellowship. The Friends have taken great pride in facilitating the donations the fellowship has made to the hospital for purchasing books and equipment over the years. The Friends, understand the difficulty in attracting new members and sympathise with the fellowship regarding the need to make the decision to close.

The fellowship made their first donation to the hospital via Friends in December 2018 and since then have donated a total of $25,593 to the hospital. Their generous donations have mainly been allocated to the purchase of books for children to read whilst in hospital; however a patient transport chair was also purchased with a separate additional donation.

Books selected this time by the hospital Play Therapist team had a particular focus on Aboriginal stories. The donation also included two IPads which will be provided to children’s whilst in hospital to assist with their reading and phonics. Such Apps as Book Creator and Hooked On Phonics on the IPads help children learn the building blocks of reading.

“These books are always well received by the staff and patients of the hospital and it is always nice to have new ones to select from” explains Marisa Senior Play Therapist.

The Dickens Fellowship, founded in 1902, is a worldwide association of people who share an interest in the life and works of Charles Dickens. Other fellowships around the world will continue to operate, as it is only the Adelaide branch that has decided to close.

The Friends would like to sincerely thank the Adelaide Dickins Fellowship and their long-standing treasurer Rose-Marie for their support over the years. Their final and most recent donation of $20,000.00 will be held in the Friends account with funds dispersed annually for the purchase of books and other reading devises for the WCH Wards. This is a gift that will keep on giving for some time to come.
