New Orthotics System In Our Sites
Approximately 240 children per year from around South Australia attend the Orthotics Department at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital for the manufacture of custom-made orthoses and prostheses. The process currently involves taking plaster impression moulds in most cases, which can be uncomfortable and claustrophobic for some children. The turnaround time for each child is around two weeks and requires the families to return to the hospital for fitting.
There is a better way.
The Friends have launched a fundraising campaign to raise $100,000 for a new Orthotics System with computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) which replaces some or all manual processes in the manufacture of custom-made orthoses and prostheses. Using CAD negates the need for taking plaster impression moulds in most cases and makes the design process fast, clean, precise and reproducible, with changes trackable over time. The CAM component of the proposed system is a small milling machine that produces custom-made foot orthoses with a turn-around time of less than 1 hour rather than 2 weeks. The purchase of a scanner, foot design software and the foot orthosis milling machine is the first step toward becoming a centre of excellence for orthotics and prosthetics.
