Kadina Auxiliary Member ‘Margie’ shares her Volunteering Story

Margaret Davies (Margie) is a Kadina Auxiliary member of 50 years and a very proud Life Member. Margie explains how her membership came about…

“I was invited to join the auxiliary by Kadina Auxiliary President Corinne Warmington. I was newly married and didn’t know a soul in the area. Corinne took me under her wing. I soon became the Kadina Auxiliary Secretary within a meeting or two! It was a fantastic way to meet people who in turn helped me settle into country life.

I have experienced many memorable moments over the years. Just recently our Auxiliary held a morning tea and invited two locals to speak about their experiences with the WCH. Hearing their stories of need and connection makes my volunteering journey extremely worthwhile.

In my early days our committee meetings were held in our homes. It was a meeting at my home that a now fellow Life member Brenda Cross gave a demonstration of making pavlova rolls. Since those days there has been an abundance of pavlova rolls created in my kitchen – I was forever grateful as at that time I was a new bride and very new to the art of country cooking.

Our auxiliary hosted Melbourne Cup Days with a fashion parade and a lunch to die for (needless to say pavlova rolls were on the menu). Quite often these events were held in people’s gardens. The workload was challenging but us committee members had a great time working together to raise money for a great cause. In those days many members did not work away from home.

My membership has given me a wonderful lifetime of volunteering within the community thanks to the Friends of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital Inc. 50 years later I continue to enjoy meeting new young members who join with enthusiasm and new ideas of fundraising for such a worthy cause.
