Kadina Care Packs made with Kindness
Friends of the Kadina Auxiliary group have been making and donating care packs to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital since 2017. During this time around 400 packs have been distributed to hospital consumers.
The care packs consist of donated personal care items such as a mini shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a comb. The items are packed into donated toiletry bags or alternatively a toiletry bag sewn by our members.
Kadina Secretary, Steph explained ‘Our auxiliary sends the packs on average once - twice a year. Previous feedback has told us that these packs are greatly received from mothers who arrive at the hospital with very little due to their individual circumstances. If we are missing a particular item for the packs such as toothpaste or toothbrushes, we will reach out to businesses such as a local dentist to request donations.
In addition, the Kadina members sew individually designed pillowcases for children in the Medical Short Stay ward. Kadina President Lorraine advised ‘The pillowcases are a much newer part of our donations to the hospital and came about more recently, perhaps in the last 2 years. The idea was put to the auxiliary after a member’s child had received one when in hospital. We realised that this was something our sewers in the group may be able to assist with. The pillowcases are bright and fun and aim to add some colour to a child’s hospital room. The pillowcases help the child feel more comfortable in their environment and can be a colourful distraction from their treatments or therapies. We are aware there are other groups who donate pillowcases, and we were inspired by their idea. We have so far donated approximately 70-80 pillowcases to the medical short stay ward.
Phil Robinson Executive Director, Corporate Services, WCHN was pleased to receive the recent donation of an additional 40 packs and 25 pillowcases. Phil thanked the dedicated Kadina members Lorraine and Sue (middle) for coordinating these wonderful contributions.
